Outside Agency workers/ Private Hires in the workplace There has been an increase of suspected 'Private Hires' in our schools. It appears that there has been a growing number of workers being hired privately by families to come into our schools and work as EAs with specific children.
We are NOT disputing the need of the children being services, but the fact that an outside worker is being paid to do our job.
In the past when a parent has decided that they want their child to have more individual assistance in the form of a one on one worker, and the Ministry does not fund an EA for them, the board has arranged a payment system where the parent pays the board, and the board hires an EA from the temp list. This actually benefits all involved - the child gets more individual attention, our jobs are protected, and the person hired for the job gets a guaranteed wage along with any temp benefits that they might be entitled to by our collective agreement.
We need to safeguard our jobs. With cutbacks, many full time EAs are now working part time positions. If we allow private hires to come into our workplace our jobs will be in further jeopardy. Please report any such situation to me as soon as you suspect it so that it can be investigated.
